There are a few key days in everyone’s calendars each year. Birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and Easter. And, of course, Flying Ant Day.
For those blissfully unaware, the ever-changing date when ants take flight and swarm the country most often occurs between June and September. As explained by the Royal Society of Biology, it’s the day “when males and new queens leave the nest to mate, with many ant colonies doing so on the same day when the conditions are just right.”
The sudden influx of airborne insects often catches people by surprise when they leave the house or the office on a sunny afternoon, and so what has been dubbed ‘Flying Ant Day’ has become something of a talking point and even a meme on social media channels.
When does flying ant day happen?
This is a day when many ant colonies simultaneously leave the nest to mate, in the right conditions. This is how many ant species, including the black garden ant Lasius niger, leave their old nest to start new colonies.
One survey found that there is often not just one flying ant day, but that flying ants are spotted on as many as 96% of days between early June and early September.
The pattern of flying ants varied greatly between years. Sometimes the same ant colony may produce flying ants more than once throughout the season.
If you’re worried about flying ants or other insects invading your home now or in the future, fear not – you can protect your property and your loved ones from unwanted pests with Insect Screens such as those offered by us here at Appeal Shading.
Insect Screens Explained
Insect Screens, also known as Fly Screens, Bug Screens, Insect Mesh or other variations, are the modern and discreet way to keep your home protected all through the year from pests and other small-but-irritating intrusions.
The ClearVu micro-mesh fabric doesn’t spoil your view, as it’s almost unnoticeable to the untrained eye – and more importantly, it keeps pests out. Even the overwhelming insect influx on Flying Ant Day (whenever it might fall) is no match for our Insect Screens.
And when the insect screen is not needed it discretely retracts away into a neat cassette.
Every home is different, so every one of our Insect Screens is made to measure by the highly skilled team here at Appeal. For bespoke, hassle-free service every step of the way, you can count on us. We’ll meet with you to understand what you’re looking for, and whether you need Insect Screens for your windows, doors or conservatory, we’ll work closely with you to provide exactly the right products and service to suit you and your home.
