We love summer here at Appeal Home Shading. It’s the time for days out at the beach, family barbecues and lots of ice cream. When the days are longer and brighter, we tend to feel more upbeat and while it’s a cliché, everyone does seem to smile more. However, there’s always one drawback; it can be harder to get to sleep.
Hotter days mean stuffier homes and getting a good rest when the air feels heavy isn’t easy. We’ve all spent at least one night on top of the covers, trying to drift off with the air conditioning on full. Installing the right set of window blinds can help.
The Importance Of Sleep
Health experts always seem to talk about the importance of sleep, but there’s a good reason for that. People over the age of 18 need at least seven hours of rest each night. A single disrupted night can make you feel dreadful, and prolonged bouts of insomnia are a deeply unpleasant experience. As your body becomes increasingly exhausted, you’re more likely to suffer mood swings, forgetfulness and confusion.
It’s not just your mental health either. Lack of sleep can result in metabolic changes that may be linked to obesity, and you’re more at risk of cardiovascular disease as well. Getting a decent amount of shuteye is crucial to healthy living, but how do you do that if your bedroom feels like an oven?
Blackout Blinds, Honeycomb Blinds And Other Options
One of the best ways to reduce the temperature is with blackout blinds. As their name suggests, they’re designed to stop external light sources from entering the home and keep the interior space dark. The side effect of this is they can make things cooler as well, especially if you have them down during the day.
Shutting that much light out isn’t for everyone but if you want your house to remain bright, there are other options. Honeycomb Energy Saver blinds have been shown to reduce summer heat gain by up to 78%, and their unique structure makes a superb thermal barrier, perfect for keeping your house cool. Blackout and Honeycomb blinds should be your first choices, but all of our products can help.
For example, pleated blinds still allow some light in and are a softer, more subtle way to cut down the heat. Roller blinds have a similar effect, but so long as they’re closed, any shading solution will do some good.
This might sound counterintuitive, especially as conventional wisdom dictates that having the windows open and increasing the airflow is the best idea. However, keeping the windows covered is a common technique for reducing household temperatures in hotter countries, and it works in the UK too.
